By: Capital Energy · 30 Aug 2021

The Ministry for the Green and Fair Energy Transition is presenting the wind farms Céfiro (192 MW), Paucali (114 MW), Arlo (102 MW) and Argestes (96 MW) for public information

  • The commissioning of these facilities and their associated electricity evacuation infrastructures, located in the provinces of Teruel, Saragossa and Tarragona, will involve an investment of around €330 million
  • Céfiro, Paucali, Arlo and Argestes will be capable of producing over 1.5 million MWh per year, enough to supply clean energy to close to 630,000 homes in Aragon, and will prevent the annual emission of almost 600,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere
  •  Its construction will create around 2,900 jobs and will have an annual financial impact on the local coffers, and also through leasing agreements, of at least €4.3 million.

Zaragoza and Teruel, 30th August 2021.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy Company founded in 2002 with the aim of becoming the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, has just taken a major step towards the development and promotion of renewable energy in Aragón.

The Ministry for the Green and Fair Energy Transition and Demographic Challenge (Miteco) has presented for public information the requests for authorisation[1] of the Céfiro, Paucali, Arlo and Argestes wind farms, which will be located in the regions of Matarraña, Bajo Aragón and Bajo Aragón-Caspe. With a total joint capacity of 504 megawatts (MW), these parks will be capable of supplying over 1.5 million megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy per year, equivalent to the consumption of close to 630,000 homes in Aragon, thus preventing the annual emission of almost 600,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Their construction and the construction of their associated evacuation infrastructures, located in the provinces of Teruel, Saragossa and Tarragona, will entail an investment of around €330 million and will create around 2,900 jobs during the peak construction times. Capital Energy will also provide permanent jobs for around 100 local professionals during the operations and maintenance stage.

These installations will have an annual financial impact on local coffers (Real Estate Tax, Land Tax and Economic Activities Tax), as well as with lease agreements, of almost €4.3 million. About €10 million, which is the one-off payment for the tax on construction, installations and building works (ICIO), can be added to this recurring sum.

  • Argestes wind farm:

It would be located in the municipal districts of La Fresneda, Fórnoles, La Portellada and Ráfales, in the province of Teruel. Its evacuation infrastructure would be located in the Teruel municipalities of La Fresneda, Valjunquera, Valdeltormo and Mazaleón. The project will entail an investment of around €60 million. It will have 16 wind turbines, with 6 MW unit power for a capacity of 96 MW and it will produce over 290,400 MWh per year, enough to cover the electricity supply for almost 120,000 homes. Argestes will also prevent the annual emission of more than 110,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

  •  Arlo wind farm:

Arlo will involve an investment of almost €62 million and it will be built in the municipal districts of Maella, in the province of Saragossa, and Valdealgorfa and Mazaleón, in the province of Teruel. The evacuation infrastructure will also be located in the latter two municipalities. It will have an installed power of 102 MW, distributed over 17 turbines of 6 MW each, and will be capable of producing over 295,600 MWh. It will provide clean power to around 120,000 homes, preventing the annual emission of more than 110,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere

  • Paucali wind farm:

Paucali will have 19 wind turbines, with 6 MW unit power for an installed power of 114 MW and it will produce over 332,200 MWh per year, enough to cover the electricity supply for almost 135,000 homes. This wind farm will prevent the annual emission of more than 130,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, it will be located in Maella and its evacuation infrastructure in the same Saragossa municipality and Mazaleón. Its development will entail a total investment exceeding €73 million.

  •  Céfiro wind farm:

With an investment of €135 million, Céfiro will be located in the municipal districts of Mazaleón, Valdeltormo, Valjunquera, La Fresneda and Fórnoles and will share the evacuation infrastructure with the three aforementioned wind farms. It will be built in the municipalities of Mazaleón and Calaceite, in the province of Teruel; Maella, in the province of Saragossa; and Casares, Batea, Villalba dels Arcs, La Pobla de Massaluca, La Fatarella and Ascó, in the province of Tarragona. Its 32 wind turbines, with 6 MW unit power, will have a capacity of 192 MW and will produce over 597,100 MWh per year, to provide clean power to almost 250,000 homes, preventing the annual emission of close to 235,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Capital Energy aims to boost the socioeconomic growth of Aragon

Capital Energy is developing 1,500 MW in Aragon, mainly from wind, distributed over about a dozen projects. With the commissioning of all of this renewable energy capacity, which will entail a total investment exceeding €1,100 million, the company will be able to cover the power consumption of over 1.7 million homes per year and prevent the annual emission of close to 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The full development of this portfolio will also provide Capital Energy with a driving force effect in the community, because the construction of these facilities will create around 8,500 jobs and will entail a tax contribution of over €26 million. During the operation and maintenance stage the company will provide permanent quality jobs for over 300 professionals from the area. The annual tax contribution will amount to over €8 million.

In recent months the company has made progress on the paperwork for the Biota and Muno wind farms (in the Saragossa region of Cinco Villas), Diana and Vientos del Sur (in the Saragossa region of Campo de Borja) and Las Mareas I and II (in the Bajo Cinca region, belonging to the provinces of Huesca and Saragossa). These projects entail a total power of 580 MW.

Capital Energy, which has an office in Saragossa with eight employees from Aragon and from where it addresses the growth of its clean energy project in the region, is also putting faith in the development of new storage technologies and green hydrogen. To this end, it joined the Board of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation in late November 2020.

A portfolio of more than 35 GW on the Iberian Peninsula

In line with its commitment to a green and fair energy transition, Capital Energy currently has a portfolio of wind and solar projects in the Iberian Peninsula with around 35 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, of which more than 8.7 GW have already received network access grants.

Thanks to the launch of its retail arm in the final quarter of 2020, Capital Energy reached its strategic aim of being present on the entire renewable energy value chain: from development, where, given its 20-year history, the Company has a consolidated position, to construction, production, storage, operation and supply.

The aim of the Company, which has more than 385 employees distributed throughout 15 offices in Spain and Portugal, is to deliver to the end consumer the 100%-renewable energy that it is already producing at its facilities.
