Capital Energy moves forward in the pioneering development of three photovoltaic plants in the Region of Madrid: La Vega, Albars and Cruz

By: Capital Energy · 16 Nov 2021

The applications for authorisation of these facilities, which will be among the first renewable plants in the region, are released to public information

  • The commissioning of these facilities and their associated electricity evacuation infrastructures, located in the municipalities of Fuenlabrada, Humanes de Madrid, Parla, Pinto and Torrejón de Velasco, will involve an investment of over €126 million
  • Thanks to their 529,500 solar panels, La Vega, Albares and Cruz will be capable of supplying clean energy to around 260,000 Madrid homes and will prevent the emission of more than 250,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year
  • Their construction will create around 1,100 jobs and will have an annual financial impact on local coffers, and also with lease agreements, of around €2.7 million

Madrid, 16 November 2021.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy Company founded in 2002 with the aim of becoming the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, has just taken an unprecedented step towards the development renewable energies in the Community of Madrid.

The applications for authorisation[1] of its La Vega, Albares and Cruz photovoltaic plants, which would be the company's first renewable facilities in the region and which will be among the first to start up in the region, have just been released to public information. Located in the municipalities of Fuenlabrada, Humanes de Madrid, Parla, Pinto and Torrejón de Velasco, they will have a combined installed capacity of 305 megawatts (MW) and their commissioning will involve an investment of over €126 million.

Thanks to their almost 529,500 solar panels, La Vega, Albares and Cruz will be capable of producing over 624,500 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy per year, equivalent to the consumption of almost 260,000 Madrid homes, thus preventing the annual emission of around 250,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The construction of these three plants and their associated electricity evacuation infrastructures will lead to the creation of over 1,100 jobs during peak construction periods. Capital Energy will also provide permanent jobs for around 125 local professionals during the operations and maintenance stage.

These facilities will also have an annual financial impact on local coffers (Land Tax and Economic Activities Tax), as well as with lease agreements, of almost €2.7 million. A sum of €5 million, which is the one-off payment for the tax on construction, installations and building works (ICIO), can be added to this recurring sum.

  • La Vega photovoltaic plant:

It will be located in the towns of Fuenlabrada, Humanes de Madrid and Parla and its construction will involve an investment of around €54 million. Its over 226,000 solar panels provide total installed power of 130 MW and it will be capable of producing over 262,000 MWh and cover the annual electricity supply to almost 109,000 homes, preventing the emission of more than 105,000 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

  •  Albares photovoltaic plant:

Located in the municipalities of Parla, Pinto and Torrejón de Velasco, its construction will involve an investment of over €41 million. It consists of some 173,900 solar panels, capable of producing almost 209,000 MWh and combining an installed capacity of 100 MW. It will be able to provide clean electricity to around 87,000 homes, preventing the annual emission of more than 83,500 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

  •  Cruz photovoltaic plant:

With an installed power of 75 MW (129,600 panels), this plant will be located in the Madrid municipalities of Fuenlabrada and Parla and will involve an investment of around €31 million. It will be able to produce around 153,600 MWh per year, enough to cover the energy demand of around 64,000 homes, and it will prevent the emission of more than 61,400 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

A portfolio of more than 35 GW on the Iberian Peninsula

In line with its commitment to a green and fair energy transition, Capital Energy currently has a portfolio of wind and solar projects in the Iberian Peninsula with around 35 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, of which more than 8.7 GW have already been awarded grid access permits.

Thanks to the launch of its retail arm in the final quarter of 2020, Capital Energy reached its strategic aim of being present on the entire renewable energy value chain: from development, where, given its 20-year history, the Company has a consolidated position, to construction, production, storage, operation and supply.

The aim of the Company, which has more than 390 employees distributed throughout 15 offices in Spain and Portugal, is to deliver to the end consumer the 100%-renewable energy that it is already producing at its facilities.
