Capital Energy progresses with the development of two new wind farms in Galicia: Vilartoxo and Barrosino

Vilartoxo and Barrosino will have a joint capacity of 40.5 megawatts (MW) and will supply clean energy to some 53,000 Galician homes, preventing the emission of more than 51,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere per year.
Their construction, planned to begin in the first quarter of 2023, will create around 230 jobs in the rural area and will have an annual financial impact on the local coffers, and also through leasing agreements, of around €280,000.

Santiago de Compostela, 9^th September 2021.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded in 2002 with the aim of becoming the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, continues in the establishment of its renewable energy project in Galicia.

The Xefatura Territorial da Vicepresidencia Segunda e Consellería de Economía, Empresa e Innovación da Coruña (Regional Second Vice-Presidency and Council for the Economy, Business and Innovation of A Coruña) is presenting for public consultation the company’s applications for authorisation^[1] of two new wind farms: Vilartoxo and Barrosino, which will have a joint capacity of 40.5 megawatts (MW). The commissioning of these renewable energy facilities and their electricity evacuation infrastructures, located in the municipalities of Val do Dubra and A Baña, will involve an investment of around €33 million.

In total, Vilartoxo and Barrosino will have nine wind turbines and will generate around 128,400 megawatts hour (MWh) of clean electricity per year, equivalent to the consumption of over 53,000 Galician homes. They will also prevent the annual emission of more than 51,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

The construction of these two wind farms and their associated electricity evacuation infrastructures, scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2023, will create over 230 jobs in the rural area during the peak periods of the work. Capital Energy will also provide permanent jobs for around eight local professionals during the operations and maintenance stage.

These facilities will also have an annual financial impact on local coffers (Property Tax and Economic Activity Tax), as well as with lease agreements, of around €280,000. The one-off payment for the tax on construction, installations and building works (ICIO), exceeding €980,000, is also added to this recurring sum.

Vilartoxo wind farm:

It will be located in the municipalities of Val do Dubra and A Baña and its construction will entail an investment of €21.5 million. With an installed power of 27 MW, distributed over six wind turbines of 4.5 MW each, it will be capable of producing 85,000 MWh, enough to supply over 35,000 homes a year. Vilartoxo will also prevent the annual emission of more than 34,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

Barrosino wind farm:

Located in the municipality of A Baña, its development will entail an investment of almost €11.2 million. Its three 4.5 MW wind turbines will have a capacity of 13.5 MW, and will be able to generate over 43,400 MWh. This production will be able to cover with renewable energy the consumption of around 18,000 homes, preventing the annual emission of more than 17,000 tonnes of CO₂ into the atmosphere.

A commitment to the social and economic development of Galicia

In line with its commitment to the green and fair energy transition, Capital Energy wants to complement the development of its renewable energy projects in Spain and Portugal with the launch of social and environmental action programmes that are adapted to local needs in order to maximise its contribution to the social and economic progress of every territory in which it operates. The company has already implemented several initiatives with social organisations in Galicia, mainly focusing on under-served groups of people.

Among its main social actions is the signing of a framework agreement with the Asociación de Persoas con Discapacidade da Bisbarra de Muros (Adisbismur), the object of which is to promote projects that lead to employment, social welfare and the integration of people with disabilities in the region. This has taken shape in a first financial backing project for the association to start up a self-consumption facility at its occupational centre in the municipality of Outes. On the other hand, the company has donated material, furniture and funds to the Fundación de Discapacitados Psíquicos de A Barcala, in the municipalities of Negreira and A Baña, the town halls of which are both sponsors of the Foundation.

Capital Energy has been developing renewable infrastructures in Galicia since 2009. At present, it has an office in the San Lázaro district of the Galician capital, where 13 employees work - all of them residents of the municipalities where the Company promotes its facilities - and which has the capacity to triple its staff as the administrative procedures of the projects progress.

The company is developing around 39 wind farms in this autonomous community, distributed throughout the four provinces, with combined total power exceeding 1,050 megawatts (MW). Their development entails a global investment of around €855 million, and would enable Capital Energy to generate an important pull-through effect on the community. The construction of all these renewable energy facilities will lead to the creation of over 6,100 jobs in rural areas and will involve a tax contribution of over €25.5 million. During the operation and maintenance stage, the company will provide permanent quality jobs for over 200 professionals from the area. The annual tax contribution will amount to over €7 million.

A portfolio of more than 35 GW on the Iberian Peninsula

Currently, the group has a portfolio of wind and photovoltaic projects on the Iberian Peninsula totalling around 35 gigawatts (GW) of power, of which over 8.7 GW already have network access grants.

Thanks to the launch of its retail arm in the final quarter of 2020, Capital Energy reached its strategic aim of being present on the entire renewable energy value chain: from development, where, given its 20-year history, the Company has a consolidated position, to construction, production, storage, operation and supply.

The aim of the Company, which has more than 380 employees distributed throughout 15 offices in Spain and Portugal, is to deliver to the end consumer the 100%-renewable energy already being produced at its facilities.
