Capital Energy further braces its commitment to Aragón by signing three new agreements pursuant to its Territories Project

Aragón is now the main beneficiary of this initiative, as four of the seven agreements signed by the enterprise in Spain to date are located in the region 

• In partnership with the municipal governments of Fuendejalón, Ainzón and Bureta, the enterprise will promote actions tailored to the requirements of those municipalities over the course of the development and launch of the Diana and Vientos del Sur wind farms, with respective installed capacities of 88.2 MW and 63 MW 
• The Territories Project combines Capital Energy’s contribution to the decarbonisation of the economy and the transformation of the energy model with its desire to help foster the development of Spain’s regions, harnessing local talent and nurturing their social, industrial and business fabric

Zaragoza, 18 March 2022.- Capital Energy, the Spanish energy enterprise founded two decades ago aiming to become the first vertically-integrated, 100%-renewable operator in the Iberian Peninsula, reasserts its commitment to the socio-economic development of Aragón.

The enterprise has signed three new collaboration agreements with the municipal governments of Fuendejalón, Ainzón and Bureta within the framework of its Territories Project, combining its contribution to the decarbonisation of the economy and the transformation of the energy model with its desire to help foster the development of Spain’s regions, harnessing local talent and nurturing their social, industrial and business fabric.

Aragón is now the main beneficiary of this initiative by the enterprise to date, as the region is the location for four of the seven agreements so far signed in Spain. Capital Energy undertakes to implement, during the construction of the Diana and Vientos del Sur wind farms, various actions agreed by the parties and tailored to the needs of each municipality.

These interventions will be implemented within the framework of specific action lines, including the improvement of infrastructure and services, connectivity and digitalisation, protection of artistic and cultural heritage, education, health and socio-occupational integration of disadvantaged groups.

Indeed, some initiatives to benefit the residents of these localities in the province of Zaragoza are already in the pipeline, such as the launch of projects to boost energy efficiency and self-sufficiency at municipal facilities, as well as the improvement of sanitation networks.

Likewise, the collaboration between local governments and the renewable energy group will persist in the operating and maintenance phase of these renewable assets, as they will continue to carry out initiatives that fulfil the aforementioned requirements. These agreements re-affirm the commitment of the municipal governments and the enterprise to contribute to the sustainable development of each municipality by promoting actions that effectively improve the quality of life of the residents and the surrounding community.

Diana will be located in the municipalities of Ainzón and Bureta and will have an installed capacity of 88.2 megawatts (MW), distributed across 16 wind turbines. It will provide clean electricity to meet the annual demand of more than 100,000 households in the region, thanks to the 284,000 megawatt hours (MWh) it will be able to generate. Furthermore, it will avoid 105,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The construction of this wind farm will entail an investment of around 88 million euros and will create some 320 jobs at the peak of the construction period. During the operating and maintenance phase, it is expected to provide permanent employment to 12 professionals from the area, and also to help generate around 10 indirect jobs.

Vientos del Sur, meanwhile, will be equipped with 12 wind turbines for a total installed capacity of 63 MW, with which it will be able to produce 210,000 MWh of electric power per year, equivalent to the consumption of almost 80,000 households. It will thus avoid 78,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. The launch of this wind farm, located in Fuendejalón and Ainzón, will require an investment of 66 million euros and create around 230 jobs at the peak of the construction period. During the operating and maintenance phase, it is expected to provide permanent employment to some 9 professionals from the region and will generate approximately 7 indirect jobs.

Furthermore, these renewable assets will contribute a combined total of 450,000 euros annually to the local coffers and approximately 4.4 million euros to GDP each year over the course of their useful lifetime. In addition to this recurring sum is the one-off payment of their respective local building tax (ICIO), which could exceed 2.5 million euros. Note that part of the power generated at Diana and Vientos del Sur will be evacuated in Navarra, a region where the enterprise also expects to sign similar agreements in the near future.
