By: Capital Energy · 10 May 2022

Madrid, 10 May 2022.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded two decades ago that aims to become the first vertically-integrated, 100%-renewable energy company in the Iberian Peninsula, and the British energy giant Shell have signed an agreement to analyse the joint project development of offshore wind projects in Spain and Portugal.

Drawing on their complementary skills and strengths, both companies are going to explore opportunities in line with their interest in these countries, especially in the field of floating offshore wind energy.

Shell boasts more than two decades of experience in wind infrastructure development, as well as half a century working in offshore engineering projects in the North Sea.

Capital Energy, with headquarters in Madrid, also has ambitious growth plans in this sector, with approximately 2000 MW under development, whereby it is striving to lead the Spanish offshore wind sector, in line with the success obtained in recent onshore wind energy auctions. To this end, in recent months the company has entered into agreements with shipbuilders and other important industrial players in the Canary Islands.

Pablo Alcón, Offshore Manager at Capital Energy, has assured that “we are especially proud of having chosen Shell as partner in the offshore wind business in Spain and Portugal. We therefore continue to consolidate our company and offshore project in the forefront of this sector on the Iberian Peninsula. This agreement reveals our firm commitment to offshore wind and together with Shell not only will we be able to supply green and affordable energy, but also promote the socio-economic development of those regions where we operate our wind farms”.

For her part, Natalia Latorre, CEO of Shell España, pointed out that “the roadmap for offshore wind energy in Spain, proposed in December 2021, represents a great opportunity to explore the development of projects in the country that are aligned with our strengths and strategic ambition to be an integrated energy leader. We are very excited to collaborate with Capital Energy in analysing those opportunities”.
