Capital Energy progresses with development of its first wind farm in Cantabria, Garma Blanca

  • The Department of Industry and Energy of the Government of Cantabria submits plans to public consultation.

Santander, 26th February 2021. Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded in 2002 with the vocation of becoming the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, continues to move forward to ensure the development of its clean energy project in Cantabria.

The Department of Industry and Energy of the Regional Government of Cantabria has announced that it is submitting the application for permission for its first wind farm in the region to public consultation: Garma Blanca. This renewable installation will have an installed power of 51 megawatts (MW) and involves an investment of almost EUR41,000,000 [1].

The 13 wind turbines in this Capital Energy wind farm will be capable of supplying 145,150 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of more than 60,400 homes in Cantabria, and preventing the annual emission of more than 58,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The Garma Blanca wind farm, in the municipal districts of Arredondo, Miera, Riotuerto, Entrambasaguas and Solórzano will also stimulate the creation of more than 295 jobs during its construction stage (10 in the operation phase) and will have an annual financial impact on regional (wind fees) and local (property tax and trade tax) coffers, and also through leasing agreements, of more than EUR267,000. EUR1,230,000, which is the one-off payment for the tax on construction, installations and building works (ICIO), can be added to this recurring sum.

Nowadays, Capital Energy has 17 renewable energy projects in Cantabria, which are all wind-based. All together they total almost 690 MW, and their development will involve a global investment of approximately EUR650,000,000.
