Capital Energy boasts wind and solar-based projects in Portugal with a collective capacity of 2,500 MW

By: Capital Energy · 17 Feb 2021

Through its subsidiary, Infinita Energia, the Company will construct and operate the nearly 50 plants it already has in Portugal, and sell the clean energy that they produce

  • The company, whose headquarters are located in Santarém and which started operations in 2016, forecasts the ready to build (RTB) phase of around 140 megawatts (MW) between 2021 and 2022

Capital Energy is a Spanish energy company founded in 2002 with the vocation of becoming the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, involved in promotion and development all the way up to the generation, operation, storage and marketing of clean electrical energy.

For almost 20 years, the Company has been working in the renewable sector and preparing itself for this very moment: becoming a main player in a sector called upon to play a key role in achieving environmental, economic and social sustainability in Spain and Portugal.

Capital Energy has big plans for the neighbouring country, as revealed last Wednesday by Juan Lasala, its non-executive President, during his participation in the conference 'Opportunities in renewable energies in Portugal', organized by Llorente and Cuenca for the Embassy of Portugal.

Specifically, through its subsidiary Infinita Energia, the Company has wind and solar projects in Portugal whose combined potential amounts to 2,500 megawatts (MW) and whose development will be supported by Portuguese suppliers both national and local. The Company’s idea is to construct and operate these renewable installations and market the clean energy that they produce.

Located in 16 Portuguese districts, these plants are spread over three geographical areas:

  • In the north, there are 24 sites totalling 1,242 MW. Of these, 134.4 MW already have access rights granted, namely, Zonda (46.2 MW), which will boast the biggest turbine in Portugal to date, and will be the first wind farm on the market, and Carlinga (88.2 MW);
  • In the centre, there are 17 sites totalling another 943 MW;
  • Finally, in the south the portfolio totals 320 MW, from seven more sites.

Capital Energy, whose subsidiary began operations in Portugal in November 2016, anticipates that around 140 MW will be in the ready to build (RTB) phase between 2021 and 2022.

Infinita Energia, which is committed, like the parent company, to the Fair and Green Transition, has its headquarters in the region of Santarém and branch offices in Lisbon and Porto. Currrently, it has 15 members of staff and, in the course of the year, it is expected that at least another five professionals will be hired.

Present on the entire renewable value chain

Nowadays, and following the launch of its own retail arm at the end of October 2020, Capital Energy is present along the entire value chain of the renewable sector. To achieve its strategic objective, the Company, which recently secured the right to produce 620 megawatts (MW) of wind-based energy at the Government’s renewable energy auction, has a portfolio of wind and solar projects exceeding 35 gigawatts (GW), of which more than 7 GW already have the network access permits granted.

In addition, the Company is working intensively not only to equip itself with the human resources in the necessary quantity and quality (it has gone from 30 to 350 employees in just three years) but also to obtain the financing required for its business plan. This is why the Company is following the evolution of the markets very closely, and is evaluating different ways to finance its operations. It is currently analysing a large range of short, medium and long-term financial instruments.
