The agreements are conditional on the building and operation of the Isidoro, Veleta and Torneros wind farms and their evacuation infrastructures

  • This initiative combines the company’s contribution to the decarbonisation of the economy and the transformation of the energy model, by implementing renewable energy facilities, with its desire to help foster the development of the regions, harnessing local talent and nurturing their social, industrial and business fabric
  • Veleta, Torneros and Isidoro will create roughly 800 direct jobs during peak construction periods and will create an annual fiscal impact of approximately 570,000 euros during their operation and maintenance phase
  • The company and the council are already weighing up certain beneficial proposals for the residents of this town in León, such as fostering and setting up energy communities and improving socio-sanitary transport for dependent people

León, 20 April 2023.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded two decades ago with the aim of becoming the Iberian Peninsula’s first vertically integrated, fully renewable operator, continues to highlight its commitment to the socio-economic development of Castile and León, a key region for the consolidation of its clean energy project.

The company has thereby concluded three partnership agreements with the Castrocontrigo Town Council linked to its Territories Project, the first to be signed in the province of León. This initiative combines Capital Energy’s contribution to the decarbonisation of the economy and the transformation of the energy model with its desire to help promote the development of different territories, harnessing local talent and nurturing their social, industrial and business fabric.

Under these agreements, from the construction of the Veleta, Torneros and Isidoro wind farms and their evacuation infrastructures, the renewable energy group undertakes to foster various actions agreed between the parties and which will be adjusted to local needs. All the interventions will be implemented within the framework of specific action lines, including the improvement of infrastructure and services, connectivity and digitalisation, protection of artistic and cultural heritage, education, health and socio-occupational integration of disadvantaged groups.

In fact, certain beneficial proposals are already being weighed up for the residents of this town in León, such as fostering and setting up energy communities and improving socio-sanitary transport for dependent people.

Likewise, Capital Energy will continue to collaborate with the local government in the operating and maintenance phase of these renewable assets, as they will continue to carry out initiatives that fulfil the aforementioned requirements. These agreements re-affirm all the parties’ commitment to contribute to the sustainable development of Castrocontrigo, through actions that guarantee an effective improvement of the environment and the quality of life of their residents.

Isidoro will have a total capacity of 54 megawatts (MW) and will be able to deliver 135,000 megawatt hours (MWh) annually, which is sufficient to cover the energy needs of upwards of 52,000 households in Castile and León with clean electricity during that period. It will also avoid the annual emission of 50,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Meanwhile, Veleta will have a capacity of 66 MW and will be able to produce 175,000 MWh of clean electricity annually, equivalent to the consumption of upwards of 68,000 households, while avoiding the emission of 65,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Lastly, Torneros, with 54 MW of power, will generate nearly 240,000 MWh annually, with which it will be able to meet the energy needs of 93,000 households. It will also avoid the emission of 90,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The construction of these three wind farms and their evacuation lines, in the León municipalities of Castrocontrigo, Truchas, Castrillo de Cabrera, Ponferrada, Molinaseca and Cubillos del Sil and in the Zamora municipalities of Rosinos de la Requejada, Espadañedo, Muelas de los Caballeros and Justel, will create around 800 direct jobs during peak construction periods. During the operating and maintenance phase, they will provide permanent employment to around 20 professionals from the local area and it will also generate another 15 indirect jobs.

These renewable facilities will generate, annually and over the course of its useful life, a fiscal impact of nearly 570,000 euros on the local coffers, which will also receive the one-off payment of local building tax (ICIO) and other taxes, amounting to around 4 million euros. Furthermore, Isidoro, Veleta and Torneros will also contribute more than 4 million euros per year to GDP.
