Oviedo, 17 February 2023.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded more than two decades ago with the aim of becoming the Iberian Peninsula’s first vertically integrated, fully renewable operator, further bolsters its commitment to the socio-economic development of Asturias, a key region for the implementation of its clean energy project.

The Company and the Municipal Government of Boal have signed a new collaboration agreement in the region under the framework of its Territories Project. The project combines Capital Energy’s contribution to the decarbonisation of the economy and the transformation of the energy model with its desire to help foster growth in Spain’s regions, harnessing local talent and nurturing each area’s social, industrial and business fabric.

Through this agreement, Capital Energy undertakes to foster various actions from the construction of the Brañadesella wind farm, agreed between the two parties and tailored to the needs of the aforementioned Asturias municipality. These interventions will follow specific action lines, including the improvement of infrastructure and services, connectivity and digitalisation, protection of artistic and cultural heritage, education, health and socio-occupational integration of disadvantaged groups. In fact, certain beneficial proposals are already being weighed up for the inhabitants of Boal, such as improving access to the towns of Brañalibrel and Brañadesella.

Likewise, the renewable energy group will continue to collaborate with the Municipal Government in the operating and maintenance phase of the renewable asset, as they will continue to carry out initiatives that fulfil the aforementioned requirements. This agreement re-affirms both parties’ commitment to contribute to the sustainable development of Boal through actions that effectively improve the quality of life of the residents and the surroundings.

Brañadesella wind farm, a driver of local employment

Furthermore, Capital Energy and the Municipal Government of Boal have signed an additional collaboration agreement to promote the recruitment of local workers in the construction and operation of the Brañadesella wind farm.

Within the framework of this agreement, the council will use the relevant municipal communication channels to advertise job vacancies linked to the construction works and subsequent maintenance of this renewable asset. Moreover, it will establish the necessary mechanisms to ensure that candidates have a simple way to apply for vacancies. To achieve this, it plans to set up an electronic system that enables the residents of Boal to upload their CVs quickly and intuitively. It will also ensure that the candidacies adapt to the profiles the company needs.

At the same time, Capital Energy will provide the Municipal Government with comprehensive and timely information on the vacancies to be filled. In addition, as often as established by the parties, the group, which will ultimately determine both the recruitment and the contractual relationship established with the employees short-listed by the council, will report on the hirings made, in order to assess the efficiency and impact of the measures and resources provided. Lastly, the parties undertake to safeguard the principles of equality and non-discrimination throughout the process.

Brañadesella will have a total capacity of 25 megawatts (MW) and will be able to deliver upwards of 70,000 megawatt hours (MWh) annually, which is sufficient to cover the energy needs of roughly 28,000 households in Asturias with clean electricity. It will also avoid the atmospheric emission of around 26,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.

The construction of this wind farm would create over 110 direct jobs during peak periods of the works and will entail and unlock an investment of over 20 million euros. During the operation and maintenance phase, it is expected to provide stable, quality employment for three local professionals and to create two indirect jobs.

Furthermore, Brañadesella will generate, annually and over the course of its useful life, more than 75,000 euros to the local coffers, which will also receive the one-off payment of local building tax (ICIO) and other taxes, amounting to in excess of 750,000 euros. Lastly, it will contribute approximately 400,000 euros a year to GDP.
