Capital Energy starts construction of its first photovoltaic plant in Spain, La Solana

By: Capital Energy · 07 May 2021

  • The renewable energy facility, located in the province of Cáceres, will have an installed power of 20 megawatts (MW) and its development involves an investment of €13,000,000.
  • The 37,500 wind turbines at what is Capital Energy's first solar plant will supply clean energy to more than 16,000 homes and preventing the annual emission of around 15,700 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
  •  In the municipal district of Plasencia, La Solana will have an annual financial impact on the local coffers, and also through leasing agreements, of more than €110,000.

Cáceres, 7th of May 2021.- Capital Energy, the Spanish energy company founded in 2002 and whose vocation is to become the first vertically integrated 100% renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, continues to take steps to consolidate the development of its clean energy project in Spain with the start of construction of its first photovoltaic plant, specifically in Extremadura: La Solana.

The renewable energy facility, located in the province of Cáceres, will have an installed power of 20 megawatts (MW) and its development, which is forecast to last seven months, involves an investment of €13,000,000.

The 37,500 panels in the first Capital Energy solar plant will be capable of supplying 39,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of around 16,000 homes in the region, and also preventing the annual emission of around 15,700 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The La Solana plant, which will occupy 34.5 hectares in the municipality of Plasencia, will create more than 75 direct jobs during the peak periods of its construction. Furthermore, during the operation and maintenance phase it will also give permanent jobs to eight professionals from the area.

Moreover, the plant will have an annual economic impact on the local coffers (mainly property tax and trade tax), as well as from lease agreements, of some €110,000.

Apart from La Solana, Capital Energy currently has renewable energy projects in Extremadura, both in Cáceres and Badajoz, totalling more than 1,500 MW of power: 80% photovoltaic and 20% wind. All these installations would together be able to supply around 1.5 million households with clean energy and avoid the emission of 1.38 million tonnes of CO2 per year.

A portfolio of more than 38 GW on the Iberian Peninsula

In line with its commitment to a green and just energy transition, Capital Energy currently has a portfolio of wind and solar projects in the Iberian Peninsula with around 38 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, of which more than 8.5 GW have already been granted network access grants.

Due to the launch of its retail arm in the final quarter of 2020, Capital Energy reached its strategic aim of being present on the entire renewable energy value chain: from development, where, given its 20-year history, the Company has a consolidated position, to construction, production, storage, operation and supply.

The aim of the Company, which has grown from 30 employees to more than 370 in the last three years, distributed throughout 14 offices in Spain and Portugal, is to deliver to the end consumer the 100%-renewable energy that it is already produced in its facilities.
