Capital Energy purchases from General Electric the wind turbines for its second wind farm in Andalusia, El Barroso

• The renewable energy facility, located in the province of Cadiz, will have an initial installed power of 22.5 megawatts (MW).
•  The five wind turbines in the second Capital Energy wind farm in Andalusia, model GE Cypress, will supply clean energy to some 27,000 homes and will prevent the emission of more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.
•  Located In the municipality of Jerez de la Frontera, El Barroso will have an economic impact on the local coffers, and also through leasing agreements, of approximately €150,000 per year.

Cadiz, 11 June 2021.- Capital Energy, a Spanish energy Company founded in 2002 with the aim to become the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, continues to move forward to ensure the development of its clean energy project in Andalusia with the acquisition of the wind turbines for its second wind farm in this autonomous community: El Barroso.

The company has just closed with General Electric (GE) the purchase contract for the five turbines that will equip this renewable energy facility, model Cypress, with a 158-metre rotor diameter and a hub height of 121 metres, a technology that has never been installed in Spain before.

It must be noted that the majority of these wind turbines will be produced in factories across Spain that work with the supplier. For example, the rotor blades will be made in Castellón by LM Wind Power, and the towers and other electrical and mechanical components will be made elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Capital Energy and GE have signed a post-sale agreement for the monitoring and preventive and corrective maintenance of these turbines for a period of 20 years.

Located in the province of Cadiz, the El Barroso wind farm will have 22.5 MW of initial power, with construction beginning in July and envisaged to be completed in approximately one year.

The wind turbines in this second Capital Energy wind farm in Andalusia will arrive at the location in December and will be capable of supplying close to 65,000 megawatt hours (MWh) per year of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of around 27,000 homes in the region, and also preventing the annual emission of more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

El Barroso, located in the municipality of Jerez de la Frontera, will entail an investment of over €30 million and will create around 150 direct jobs during the peak periods of its construction. In the operation and maintenance phase it will also provide permanent jobs for five professionals from the area.

Moreover, the plant will have an annual economic impact on the local coffers (mainly property tax and trade tax), as well as from lease agreements, of some €150,000.

Andalusia, a key region for Capital Energy

Andalusia is a key region in Capital Energy’s project for clean energy development. The company produces over 1,610 megawatts (MW), from both wind (842 MW) and solar (771 MW), in this autonomous community, where one of its main strengths is the quality of its renewable resources.

Capital Energy is promoting the construction of 26 renewable projects, between wind (177) and solar (9), in six Andalusian provinces: the ones with the most megawatts and installations are Granada (726 MW and 6 projects) and Almeria (460 MW and 8). They are followed by Malaga (155 MW and 3); Seville (157 MW and 5); Cadiz (79 MW and 2) and Huelva (26 MW and 1).

The Company has already begun work on its first Andalusian wind farm, Loma de los Pinos, located in the town of Lebrija, in the province of Seville, which, with an installed capacity of 39 MW, will also be equipped with General Electric turbines and will be capable of supplying clean energy to 40,000 homes in the region.

A project portfolio of more than 38 GW on the Iberian Peninsula

In line with its commitment to a green and fair energy transition, Capital Energy currently has a portfolio of wind and solar projects in the Iberian Peninsula with around 38 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, of which more than 8.5 GW have already received network access grants.

Thanks to the launch of its retail arm in the final quarter of 2020, Capital Energy reached its strategic aim of being present on the entire renewable energy value chain: from development, where, given its 20-year history, the Company has a consolidated position, to construction, production, storage, operation and supply.

The aim of the Company, which has grown from 30 employees to more than 370 in the last three years, distributed throughout 14 offices in Spain and Portugal, is to deliver to the end consumer the 100%-renewable energy that it is already producing at its facilities.
