Both parties will define actions beneficial to citizens that will be implemented in the construction and operation of the Loma de los Pinos wind farm

  • This initiative will combine the company's commitment to the decarbonisation of the economy with its desire to boost the development of the communities in which it operates. It does this by relying on local talent and enhancing the industrial and business sector of each region
  • As a result of its differential approach, Capital Energy will take into account the particular features and needs of each territory and will reach a consensus with local stakeholders on the implementation of each initiative through open dialogue processes
  • The company is building the Loma de los Pinos wind farm, located in the province of Seville, which will have an installed power of 39 megawatts (MW) and will supply clean energy to some 40,000 homes, thus preventing the emission of more than 41,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

Lebrija (Seville), 4 November 2021 Capital Energy, a Spanish energy company founded in 2002 with the aim of becoming the first vertically-integrated 100%-renewable energy operator on the Iberian Peninsula, continues to take steps to align its business model, committed to the energy transition and to the socio-economic growth of the regions in which it operates.

This commitment, one of the fundamental pillars of Capital Energy's sustainability strategy, is implemented through the definition of its lines of social contribution: a priority objective of the company is to reconcile its business plan with the specific needs of each one of the territories, which allows it to ensure the creation of shared value.

To this end, the company has created the Territories Project, which combines its commitment to the decarbonisation of the economy and the transformation of the energy model with its desire to promote the development of communities. It does this by relying on local talent and enhancing the industrial and business sector of each area. Through this initiative, Capital Energy reaffirms its ultimate interest, which is to become a strategic ally of the regions, promoting employment creation, social welfare and innovation in the regions.

To this end, the company undertakes to allocate specific financial headings, during the construction and operation phases of its renewable facilities, to the implementation of consensual actions, through an open dialogue, with the different local stakeholders, in order to maximise their positive impact.

As a result of this differential approach, Capital Energy will take into account the particular features and needs of each one of the regions in selecting such initiatives. They will be framed within specific lines of action, including the improvement of infrastructure and services, connectivity and digitisation, protection of the artistic and cultural heritage, education, health and social and labour integration of disadvantaged groups.

The Territories Project starts its journey through the collaboration agreement that the company has just signed with the Municipality of Lebrija, a town in the province of Seville where it is building its first Andalusian wind farm, Loma de los Pinos. The agreement, which seeks to establish a long-term relationship, confirms the commitment to sustainability of both parties, which will analyse, over the coming months, different social and environmental actions that may be of interest for the town.

Loma de los Pinos, which is expected to begin operating in the first half of 2022, will have 39 megawatts (MW) of installed power. Its seven wind turbines, supplied by General Electric (GE), will be capable of supplying 103,000 megawatt hours (MWh) per year of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of around 40,000 Andalusian homes, and also preventing the annual emission of more than 41,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Moreover, this renewable energy plant will have an annual economic impact on local coffers (mainly Land Tax and Economic Activities Tax), as well as with lease agreements, of more than €250,000. About €500,000, which is the one-off payment for the tax on construction, installations and building works (ICIO), can be added to this recurring sum.

Andalusia, a key region for Capital Energy

Andalusia is an essential community for Capital Energy. Not surprisingly, the group is developing over 1,650 MW, both wind (about 938 MW) and solar (about 734 MW), in this autonomous community, one of whose main strengths is the quality of its renewable resource, which is above the national average and which very few regions can match. The commissioning of this entire power would entail an overall investment of over €1.1 billion.

In total, Capital Energy is promoting the construction of 34 renewable projects, 22 wind and 12 photovoltaic, in six Andalusian provinces: Almeria, Cadiz, Granada, Huelva, Malaga and Seville. The provinces where most megawatts and facilities are located are Almeria (500.5 MW and nine projects) and Granada (394 MW and four projects). They are followed by Seville (307 MW and eight), Malaga (279 MW and seven), Cadiz (143 MW and four) and Huelva (48.5 MW and two).

In addition to Loma de los Pinos, the company continues making progress in the construction of its second Andalusian wind farm, El Barroso, which it has awarded to Elecnor. Located in Jerez de la Frontera, in the province of Cadiz, the wind farm will have an initial power of 22.5 MW and its five wind turbines, General Electric Cypress model, will be capable of supplying close to 65,000 MWh per year of clean energy, equivalent to the consumption of around 27,000 homes in the region, and also preventing the annual emission of more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere per year.

It should also be noted that the company has signed a collaboration agreement with the Jerez Town Council to promote the hiring of local workers linked to the construction of this renewable facility.

Capital Energy, which now has 54 employees in Andalusia and has offices in Seville and Granada, from where it addresses the growth of its clean energy portfolio in the region, is also committed to the development of new storage technologies and green hydrogen.

A portfolio of more than 35 GW on the Iberian Peninsula

In line with its commitment to a green and fair energy transition, Capital Energy currently has a portfolio of wind and solar projects in the Iberian Peninsula with around 35 gigawatts (GW) of capacity, of which more than 8.7 GW have already been awarded grid access permits.

Thanks to the launch of its retail arm in the final quarter of 2020, Capital Energy reached its strategic aim of being present on the entire renewable energy value chain: from development, where, given its 20-year history, the Company has a consolidated position, to construction, production, storage, operation and supply.

The aim of the Company, which has more than 390 employees distributed throughout 15 offices in Spain and Portugal, is to deliver to the end consumer the 100%-renewable energy that it is already producing at its facilities.
